Becoming an Instructor

The SIU Motorcycle Rider Program is looking for a few service oriented men and women to join our part-time staff of motorcycle safety education instructors. The level of responsibility is high but the satisfaction of assisting other people as they improve their mental skills, physical coordination, and life saving driving strategies is extremely rewarding!

The SIU Motorcycle Rider Program is part of one of the largest motorcycle safety programs in the United States. Most of our instructors are "veteran" motorcyclists who have been actively involved in rider education for many years. All of them have completed the Instructor Preparation Course and maintain current certification credentials through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

SIU selectively accepts applications for enrollment in the Instructor Preparation Course and Certification Program from individuals who:

• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills,
• Have excellent social skills with a strong interest in helping other people,
• Have an Illinois class "M" motorcycle operators license or equivalent from another state,
• Have passed the Basic Rider Course
• Currently operate a motorcycle on a frequent basis, and
• Have a clean driving record with no possibility for license suspension or revocation.
• Are willing and able to work weekends
• Are at least 18 years old

Individuals accepted into the Instructor Training Course must successfully complete:

• A riding skills test to demonstrate riding proficiency,
• An 80+ hour classroom/riding instruction course conducted by certified chief instructors,
• A written knowledge test of the course curriculum and other highway safety issues,
• A student teaching evaluation phase to demonstrate communication abilities and proficiency at evaluating and coaching novice students, and
• Sign an Instructor Rules of Professional Conduct form.

Once certified, an instructor must:

• Attend annual refresher courses, and
• Maintain a basic first-aid certification.
• Comply with the rules of professional conduct

Because certain areas of our training region are understaffed and enrollment in these courses is limited, we reserve the right to select course candidates.

Becoming a Range Aide

Range-Aide qualifications

• Have passed a Basic Rider Course.
• Have and show evidence of a valid Class “M” or Class “L” Illinois drivers license or an equivalent from another state.

Job description, Range-Aide

Works under the guidance and supervision of the course Instructors as directed to perform such duties as:

• Assist Instructors in setting up cones for range exercises.
• Assist Instructors in preparing motorcycles for instruction.
• Assist Instructors in maintaining motorcycles throughout the course.
• Assist Instructors in securing motorcycles at the end of instruction.
• Assist Instructors in keeping range and storage area clean.
• Assist Instructors in non-instructional roles during the course*.

* The Range Aide shall not instruct students.

Attire

All program personnel (Range Aides as well as Instructors) shall wear long pants, a shirt with sleeves (no tank tops), and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear at all times when teaching in the classroom or on the range. Additionally, clothing should present a neat and professional appearance and must not be torn, ripped, or contain offensive language or images.

Furthermore, the following protective equipment shall be worn by Instructors & Range Aides when riding to, from, and during all rider training activities:

• Helmet
• Eye protection
• Full-fingered gloves
• Long-sleeved clothing
• Long pants
• Sturdy, over-the-ankle footwear (not cloth or canvas)

Starting times

Range Aides are expected to work 15-16 hours per course, dependent upon number of days of instruction.
